Urban Roots Q&A

Urban Roots Community Garden Center has a great website. Part of it has a "bloggish" aspect where comments are encouraged. But it's brand new and there's not much commenting yet.

One way to get people to visit the site and to interact is to "interview" gardeners with a few quick questions. I was the second interview subject. Check it out here: http://www.urbanroots.org/foryard/garden-qa-jim-charlier

It's a very nice website, you'll like the animated header graphic. It was designed 12 Grain Studio. They've also designed the site for Grassroots Gardens of Buffalo.

Urban Roots, the country's only garden center cooperative, was started by a few gardeners that were on Garden Walk Buffalo and tired of having to run out to the suburban garden centers for all their garden needs -- and tired of hearing other Garden Walk gardeners with the same lament. Previously, in the city, the nearest place to pick up garden supplies was Home Depot. I should be thanking them more often.

  2. It is a great site. It is far and away the best site for a garden center I've seen. I'm on their marketing committee and was only tangentially involved in it's design. All credit goes to John, Cynnie & the rest of the marketing committee and 12 Grains Studio. If you have web design needs, no matter where you are in the country, check them out.

  4. Oh my! I'm definitely in the same boat here in Vancouver - that boat being one without urban garden centres - so me thinks this is a great idea! Off to check out the website...

  5. We're fortunate to have in inner city garden center (centre, in Canadian). It was a chore dragging our you-know-whats out to the burbs two to three times a weekend. And then, if you forgot something, we'd wait another week. Now we still visit the outlying garden stores and are not so reliant on Home Depot.

  6. Hi

This is one of the best site I've ever seen. I wondering how much time was spent to create a little paradise...

I recently discovered a site that promotes live plants (www.giveplants.com) and I think this is best for someone who is looking for live plants and doesn't own a big space for gardening. You can order plants online in pots or in flower boxes. But its also good to raise your own garden.

I will keep following you blog. I learn a lot and I can get some ideas here in your blog. Thank you
