The most beautiful tree on earth

You can argue that fact of course. What's beautiful to me may not be to you, but these Rainbow Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus deglupta) have bark that is stunningly beautiful. Enough to stop you in your tracks and take a closer look. You know, like Charlize Theron.

They look like someone's melted Crayolas down the trunks. The interior bark is bright green, but as it sheds, it darkens and changes to blue, purple, orange and maroon. It is the only Eucalyptus species found naturally in the northern hemisphere.

I've seen them before, but these photos were taken at the Dole Plantation on Oahu, Hawaii. The parking lot is just filled with them.

It is only hardy to zone 9, so there's no chance I'll ever be able to have one. And, at 40 feet tall, it's a bit much for a small urban yard like mine.

Anyone that's seen my house knows I like color. I would take a wallpaper in these hues and patterns. Or curtains. Or a countertop. Or a tie. Or a shirt. If I could choose one tree to take with me to a desert island, this'd be the one.

  2. Striking and unusual, yes. Beautiful, sure. The most beautiful tree on earth? Give me a Burr Oak any day. It may not have rainbow colors, but it has majesty.

    1. I did look up Burr Oak on Google images, and I'll give you the majesty of an imposing, well-proportioned tree. But I love me some color! If we could cross breed them...

  4. Rob Howard was by last week to give the Oakville Hort Society his presentation on the Buffalo Garden Walk - if the folks hadn't been before, they'll be there this year! Who knew all those house colours really did come from nature after all? I say if you're going to have a favourite anything - make sure it's spectacular - and this Eucalyptus is that and more.
