Pronounced Purple Predilection

I swear I didn't do it on purpose, but 90% of what I have blooming currently is a varying shade of purple. Above are the allium.

The purple columbine.

Bachelor buttons.

Silver dollar plant.

Rhododendron.

Periwinkle (shouldn't these be more the color of... oh... say... periwinkle?).

  1. You and I seem to have the same prediliction for purple :-) I love your purple columbine - it's a beautiful color (especially next to my Black Barlow which, although I like it, doesn't look very purple). Any idea what yours is?

  2. I don't really plan it, but in my garden pink and red predominate - with roses how could it be other. But I do have a 'wild' purple columbine and I just planted a Purple Passion dahlia. Great photos.

  4. I know a lot of people whose favourite colour is purple! I love purple in the garden, it's such a great contrast against the green.

  5. GardenJunkie,
God no, I have no idea what the columbine is. I'm surprised I could remember the name columbine. But if you have a similar-colored one, yo have good taste.

    Commonweeder,
I wonder sometimes what unvoiced psychological pull has me seeking purple-flowering plants without my knowing it. And why do you tend toward red. What o these choices say about us, other than we like a certain hue?

    Tatyana,
Allium is one of my favorite too. After they're spent, we'll spray paint them in obnoxious colors and stick 'em in the Harry Potter Garden.

    EB,
Purple's not may favorite color, but it does look good in contrast (clash) nicely with almost every other color.

  6. Isn't it strange how that happens? I had been noticing recently that everything was white. I don't remember planning to have so much white. I really like the allium, the more I see it the more I know I need to plant some!

  7. Nothing wrong with purple! Purple goes with all other colors.

Love it and that's mostly what's showing in my garden on most days. I just redesigned a bed (yesterday) where we pulled out invasive shrubs -- planted it with a purple and orange color scheme.

  8. I've got to find that columbine! Do you know the name of it?

  9. Catherine,
Hmmm..sounds like you'd like white alium. Not that they exist.

    Cameron,
    Purple and orange'll be great.

    Phillip,
Sorry, no I don't know the name of that columbine. Maybe someone else does.

  10. I do plan it, often. I like single color bloom sequences. Combine them with a bursts of color and the monochrome scheme can be extremely dramatic...think Vita Sackville-West's famous white garden--it could have been a purple one.
